Top 10 most promising Russian actors under 30

They’ve managed not only to hit the ground running, being part of the right projects, been given the right character to portray and riding the crest of trends in Russian cinema, but also have managed to show their mettle.
Alexander Petrov
Alexander Petrov
29
Having taken up the path of heartthrob hero in 2012 (e.g. in the TV series, Whilst The Fiddlehead Fern Shines) he soon switched that mantle to things that were more suited to him: a charming scoundrel with a good heart. On TV, Petrov showed his skill of taking on such a character in Policeman from Rublyevka, whilst in film he was part of successful pictures such as Fyodor Bondarchuk’s Attraction and Oleg Trofima’s Ice, the latter of which grossed over 1 billion roubles. But he hasn’t rested on his laurels after his performance in the lead role. The role of simple, but dangerous guys is something he now alternates with his character of Gogol in the franchise of the same name. All in addition to breaking up his time by performing as Hamlet in Yermolayev Theatre, writing poetry, holding concerts and even recently writing a book. Varied and outstanding in his roles, pretty much all of his projects get their money out of him, whether fully breaking even or making a profit. Ilya Uchitel’s new film in which the actor plays footballer Eduard Streltsov promises nothing different from this young man.

Alexander Pal
29
Alexander began his life in Russian cinema as melancholic lad Lesha in Kiss Them All!: a picture about a wedding banquet. The film became a real hit at the box office, as did Alexander with his phlegmatic but stubborn character: the quintessential spirit of Russian celebration - happy yet ruthless. Since then, the actor has been a mainstay in comedy throughout Russian cinema, whether as the shy teacher of informatics in Oxana Karas’ Good Boy, the awkward watchman from the horror, Lad From Our Cemetery, or the slow-witted pilot, Kukushin, in Nikolay Khomeriki’s The Icebreaker. By the way, tragedy, just as all the other aspects of this dramatic actor, couldn’t be demonstrated in any other way, something the actor is soon to showcase in his upcoming projects working with Nigina Sayfullayeva, Grigory Constantinoplsky and Konstantin Bogomolov.

Rinal Mukhametov
29
Actor in the Moscow Gogol centre and student of Kirill Serebrennikov, Rinal was given his chance to solidify his position on the big screen straight after the release of The Three Musketeers from Sergey Zhigunov. However, the film in which he played the young Dartanian wasn’t so successful. Rinal hit it big in his part in Fyodor Bondarchuk’s Attraction, where his body movements were able to shape our perception of a charming being from a distant world: Hakon. In one fell swoop he became famous and overcame the title of “actor fit for one role”, he managed to climb up the ladder and be taken onto projects quickly. Rinal doesn’t choose character types, but the face of tomorrow's heroes; in the end taking on roles that are the most interesting characters in Russian cinema. The naive, stuttering employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Optimists, the guy with cerebral palsy in Times of Trouble, and soon to be the deaf hip hop dancer in Aleksei Uchitel’s The Battle. There aren’t many today that are able to demonstrate one’s talent in the two camps of on-stage drama and epic poetry simultaneously.

Ivan Yankovsky
27
Russian cinematographer knocking at the door; Ivan hasn’t demonstrated ambitions backed up by family connections, but serious ones with plans to go far. His first big film was Mikhail Mestetsky’s surrealist drama about growing up: Rag Union, shown at 2014’s Berlin Film Festival. The next serious role was together with Kseniya Rappoport in Aleksei Uchitel’s The Queen of Spades. For his role as a modern Hermann, younger than could have been conceived and with abhorrent ambition, Yankovsky received the Golden Eagle prize at just 25. Two years later and he is still switching between romantic characters in controversial projects (Guardians Of The Night, The Spring Of Life) and serious grownup cinema, all the more often choosing the latter. A confirmation of this fact can garnered from watching Ivan’s role in Yuri Bykov’s new film, The Factory, which was part of the Toronto film festival.

Victor Khorinyak
28
A graduate of one of Moscow’s most famous theatrical schools and the look of the guy next door, Victor featured in the highly-rated TV project, Kitchen, at the beginning of his career. As this TV hero - the modest and loveable barman Kostya - Khorinyak survived four seasons before he switched to another popular project (Hotel Eleon) on the TV channel STS. The actor managed to diversify away from TV thanks to his role in Dmitriy Dyachenko’s The Last Warrior. The film about the adventures of a troubled psychic in a magical country was loved by the public, which before this was indifferent to fairytale productions in cinema. Over 1.5 million RUB gross in Russia and becoming Ivan the Idiot for a new generation: 2018 certainly wasn’t a bad one for Khorinyak. Upcoming is: the release of Rezo Gigineishvili’s Designated Driver; shooting for the sequel to The Last Warrior; and a return to the TV project, Grand.

Nikita Kukushkin
27
Unusual and memorable from first sight, Nikita has brought a new meaning to novelty and variety in the roles he has taken on in Russian film. He started just as some of his peers in this list: undergoing studies under Kirill Serebrennikov. After his studies he was able to play pretty much any role at the Gogol Centre in Moscow, from a religious fanatic, to a innocuous child and an exiled deity. His range of roles in cinema is currently more narrow: the heartwarming scruff from Fyodor Bondarchuk’s Attraction and the harsh Misha from Ivan Tverdovsky’s Corrections Class. However, every plan B that he is part of becomes plan A. This is an actor that welcomes experiments, turning a character expectations on their head and being the main, outstanding personality of any film.

Alexander Gorchilin
26
Yet another student of Kirill Serebrennikov, a young man with a baby face and a filmography which screams enfant terrible of Russian cinema. He is doing a good job of avoiding the mainstream but is nevertheless loved by audiences East and West. At MMFF in 2014, Gorchilin shocked critics in his role as the footloose and fancy free artist Antonin from Valery Gai Germanika’s picture, Yes and Yes. At Cannes in 2016 he played a fragile school outcast in The Student, whilst in 2018 he played the loose-cannon punk hero Viktor Tsoi in Summer. In the most recent Kinotavr, everyone expected provocation and action art from Alexander's directing debut in Acid. However, here again he surprised everyone by shooting a balanced and precise piece of cinema about the modern generation, meanwhile avoiding making a nod to older colleagues by following their style. Not only a talented drama actor, but also able to play roles in his own style and with his own approach, all at just 26.

Danil Steklov
25
The son of actress Argippina Steklova has chosen himself a rare and almost unoccupied niche: playing the role of fully-blown scoundrel. In the 2017 Kinotavr film contest, Steklov had two such characters: the policeman Major from Kirill Pletnyov’s Light Up!; and the lad Danya from Kseniya Zuyeva’s Nearest And Dearest. Danil cemented his place in Russian cinema at the most recent Kinotavr for his role in Ivan Tverdovsky’s Jumpman, once again in the role of the cop and hardened scoundrel. Steklov shows his talent across a variety of roles at the Moscow Art Theatre, where he is part of several shows at once. However, in an interview he stated that he dreams of playing the classic antihero, Richard III, and wouldn’t be afraid to come out against negative reaction to future projects, a trait that can be quickly noticed by taking a look at his filmography.

Pavel Tabakov
23
A pale youth with a hot-blooded gaze: not a rubber stamp, but a precise description of Tabakov’s appearance. Pavel can take advantage of this look in cinema, by being the naive and vulnerable boy who becomes the hero that often shocks audiences. From being 19 years old and before graduating from his father’s theatre studio, Pavel has managed to land roles in Anna Melikyan’s Star, Andrey Proshkin’s Orlean and Alexei Mizgirev’s The Duellist. In the latter, Pavel managed to display a chivalrous nobleman without becoming vulgar, which is an achievement in itself. By the way, Tabakov junior isn’t so often called upon to take part in costume dramas as he is in big projects about the current era, but these films don’t always make it out of the red. In the meanwhile, over the next 12 months this young man will feature in the on-screen making of the books of two main writers of modernity: Empire V, based on Victor Pelevin’s book, and Tobol, based on Alexei Ivanov’s novel.

Semyon Treskunov
18
The gap between child actors and those over 20 is a generally problematic one pretty much for all motion pictures; they cannot keep up with the fastest growing teenagers. Semyon Treskunov, recently becoming an adult, is an exception to this rule. With his cinema debut taking place at the ripe young age of 12, for the past few years he has been able to combine film sets with his studies in a regular school. Having played in Alexander Mitta’s Chagall-Malevich, Vladimir Kott's At The Bottom, before rising up to the challenge in Alexander Voytinsky’s comedy, Ghost. Pigeonholed as family cinema - a genre becoming ever rarer on screens in Russian theatres - throughout Russia the film grossed almost 400 million RUB and Semyon made good of his task in the role of modest good guy. He also played the role of the good guy in Oxana Karas’ film of the same name which was awarded the main prize at Kinotavr 2017. This year he will again appear on the big screen under the same director in Ailing Angel, whilst he will also present his debut director short film On The Fringe. The good boy is trying to make headway as a serious cinematographer.
